What's New In Benefits?
Changes in Legislation From 1 January 2012
Housing Benefit provides assistance to people on low incomes to help pay their rent.
From 1 January 2012 a significant change is introduced that will apply to single people aged under 35.
This means that you may only be entitled to the lower rate of Housing Benefit for a room in shared accommodation if the following apply:
- you are single person
- you are occupying one bedroom self-contained accommodation in the private sector
- you make a new claim for Housing Benefit on or after 1 January 2012
- if you are currently receiving Housing Benefit, and your claim is due to be reviewed after 1 January 2012, and at the time of your review you will be aged 25 or over but under 35 years.
For further information about this important change to Housing Benefit, please see our factsheet.
