Beat The Burglar
Published Thursday 9th July 2009 in Council and democracy news
The Community Safety Partnership is harnessing the power of nature to help in its ongoing campaign to beat the burglar.
The Community Safety Partnership is advising residents on how to plant up their gardens with shrubs to form a natural defence.
Cllr Brian Roberts Chair of the CSP said, "This scheme whilst having a practical crime prevention aspect is also good for the environment as it gives advice to householders on what to look out for when protecting their property and what types of plants they can use to form a natural defence. Burglars are opportunists who will look for easy pickings with an easy way in and out. Planting shrubs with thorns and spikes may make the burglar think twice.'
If you imagine the property is made up of a series of rings with the house as the centre, by creating barriers at various points this will make it harder for the burglar to penetrate. The advice contained in the leaflet is very practical and most of the defensive planting suggestions can suit most locations even planting in tubs in back yards. By following a few simple steps householders can help to protect their property for little cost.
PC Mark Bates, added "We know that burglary is extremely low in Hyndburn but we want to keep it that way. Residents have a crucial role to play in making it difficult for burglars to operate.
"This initiative aims to help people protect their homes using nature itself and giving practical crime prevention advice."
The leaflets will be available through all garden centres within the borough including Read Garden Centre, Great Harwood; Nursery End Garden Centre, Clayton le Moors; Brookside Nurseries, Roundhill Road, Oswaldtwistle; Paddock Garden Centre, Oswaldtwistle and Homebase Accrington. They are also available from local libraries or the Community Safety Team at Hyndburn Council.
