Hackney Carriage Vehicles
How to Licence a Hackney Carriage Vehicle
To apply for a licence you will need to produce to the Licensing Department:
- a completed Hackney Carriage application form. You will pay the licence fee online. To see more about how we record and store your information, please refer to the Council’s privacy notice
- full log book/new keepers supplement
- valid insurance certificate or temporary cover note
Once the Licensing Department has received your application and it has been processed, we will contact you to book and take payment for the MOT. If your vehicle has been converted since manufacture, you will also need to submit the relevant certification (please see page relating to converted vehicles).
Prior to the MOT test, a calibrated tamper proof meter, swivel seat and a working roof sign must be installed.
After the MOT has taken place, the Council’s garage will forward the certificate to the Licensing Department. Once we are in receipt of the certificate, we will issue you with a new pack for the vehicle, which includes any signage, plate keys, dash pouch and bracket, if one is required. You will then need to contact the Licensing Department to arrange inspection of the vehicle. Once inspected, you will then be given the licence and plate.
This plate must remain affixed to the outside rear of your vehicle in a manner prescribed by the Council at ALL times.
If this application is a renewal, you must produce your old vehicle licence plate at the time of collection.
Once you have been issued with a licence and plate, you must adhere to the vehicle licence conditions.
