Driver Licence

The Licensing department have a duty to make sure that anyone wanting to become a Hackney Carriage/Private Hire/Joint driver are a ‘safe and suitable’ person and have all the skills and knowledge to provide this service.

The authority only issue Joint Drivers Licences and they are issued for a maximum period of 3 years, but we may grant licences for a shorter period if deemed appropriate.

The following information gives guidance on how to apply for a new driver licence and on  renewing an existing taxi driver licence.

Please be aware –

• A Joint Driver Licence will permit the driver to drive both Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicles

All new applicants are now required to apply for the Joint Driver Licence.
