Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support

How can I claim?

Claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support can be done online using our e-claim.

If you claim Universal Credit, you must tell the Department for Work and Pensions that you want to claim Council Tax Support at the same time as your Universal Credit claim. If you do not tell the Department for Work and Pensions that you want to apply for Council Tax support then you must apply to us separately using the online link in the previous paragraph. Universal Credit includes support towards your rent (if you qualify) and if you receive housing costs support through your Universal credit you cannot claim Housing Benefit.

If you reside in supported or temporary accommodation and receive Universal credit Housing Benefit can be claimed for your housing costs. A claim for Housing Benefit can be made  using the online link in the first paragraph.

Documents to support your claim

To process your claim, we need to see evidence of your identity, your tenancy, your income and your capital or savings. Details of what to submit will be provided to you at the end of your e-claim.

Please note that most proofs can be provided electronically but proof of identity documents have to be originals.
