On 8 December an extension of rent concessions for traders inside Accrington Market was approved by Hyndburn Borough Council’s Cabinet. The rent concession will continue to be in place until March 2023 and applies to all ground floor traders.
The proposal was put forward by Deputy Leader Cllr Paul Cox in an effort to further support traders who are struggling with the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

Sameena King, Manager at Accrington Market said:
“Offering support like this has been previously unheard of and, as far as I’m aware, no other markets in the region are providing this level of help. I am so pleased on behalf of our traders that our deputy leader and our cabinet have made this possible. I know first-hand that it will go a long way to helping after an incredibly difficult time.”
Traders are pleased with the result and are encouraging the local community to come along and support them. Recently Accrington Market has seen a flurry of new traders join, with all the shops on the balcony now occupied and a thriving indoor and outdoor offering.
Colin Downie, Prestige Framing:
‘It’s a good move by the Council to support the traders like this. If you support your market, you’re putting money back in the local economy instead of big shopping chains. Plus, you get the atmosphere and personalities at the market, it puts a smile on your face.’
Junaid Raza, Essentials:
‘I want to thank the Council, it’s good that they’re listening to traders and taking our views on board about what we need to survive.
‘Thanks also to local community members and our regular customers who have really helped us during difficult times especially during the pandemic.
‘And even those that weren’t buying but just came in to say hello, it’s been great for moral support.’
Sameena, Market Manager continued:
“We are still on the look-out for new businesses to join our community of traders and welcome interest from small, local, independent businesses who want to offer something new. There is a huge demand for innovative food outlets from our customers and we do have ‘pop up stall’ availability at the weekends and for special events. If you, or someone you know is interested please come and see us or send an email to markets@hyndburnbc.gov.uk.”
