COUNCIL WARNS OF SCAM TELEPHONE CALLS

The Council is aware of someone ringing residents in the Borough claiming to be from a bailiff firm acting on behalf of the Council.

The caller is demanding that immediate payment is made for non-declaration of running a business from home, for example, when challenged by the resident because they haven’t had any correspondence from the Council or Bailiff about this prior to the phone call, they have been told if they hang up an extra charge of many hundreds of pounds will be added to the debt.

The Council and Bailiff firms notify residents of arrears and payment options.

Residents who receive such a phone call unexpectedly and have never had prior contact about debts from the Council or Bailiff should consider contacting the Council first to verify before making any such payments. The information you provide may assist the Council or other authorities in putting a stop to this.
