Haworth Art Gallery to Host FREE Family-Friendly Heritage Open Day

Haworth Art Gallery would like to invite everyone to join them for their annual free family Heritage Open Day on Sunday 17th September 2023 between 12pm – 4pm, organised and produced in conjunction with the Friends of Haworth Art Gallery.

This is a day dedicated to immersing the public into the history of Haworth Art Gallery, and Hyndburn more broadly, with a wide range of completely free activities and performances taking place throughout the day.

Gillian Berry, Arts and Heritage Manager at Haworth Art Gallery, said:

“We are delighted to join forces with Heritage Open Day and their effort to join with European Heritage Days to raise appreciation for Europe’s rich and diverse cultural assets and their need for care protection. It’s a chance for our communities to come together to learn, explore and have fun by sharing the treasures on their doorstep.”

Residents will be bowled over by a working-class sing along with Jennifer Reid, a performer of Victorian broadside ballads and enthrals, all sung in a hearty Lancashire dialect. Her performances will transport people back in time and help to reconnect them with their geographical heritage.

To keep the festive atmosphere going, the day will also see the chance for visitors to experience a guided walk from William Haworth’s old weaving shed, Scaitcliffe Mill, along the railway lines to Haworth Art Gallery. Along the way, guests will learn more about the history of the Haworth family, all whilst taking in the beautiful views of Woodnook Nature Reserve and experience tales of the industrial heritage of the area.

Guests can expect to be transported back to a time gone by, having the opportunity to get stuck in to crafts and dress-up activities, as well as the chance to meet characters along the way who will share tales of the area’s industrial heritage. Residents can join the team in meeting the likes of Mr Beech the Coachman, who will relay the story of the Stables and Motor House at Haworth Art Gallery where William Haworth kept his prized Rolls Royce Silver Ghost motor car.

This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn more about the wonderful Arts and Craft House and Grounds, with Gallery staff members offering free tours of the house over the course of the day. There will be a team of volunteers and staff on hand to help answer any questions that visitors may have and offer more detailed information about the history of the Gallery.

Haworth Art Gallery is FREE to visit all year round and is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm – 4pm. For more information, call 01254 233782 or follow Haworth Art Gallery and Artist Studios on Facebook to stay up to date with all their news and events.
