How to isolate from those you live with

If you’ve got possible coronavirus symptoms, you should try to isolate from the other people you share your home with.

This is especially important if you live in a shared home with other people, such as students, co-tenants, or if you live in a home with different generations such as children, parents and grandparents, but applies to everyone who does not live alone.

This helps to reduce the chance of it spreading within families or amongst people sharing a household.

You shouldn’t go out if you’ve tested positive, have symptoms or are told to isolate. Avoid contact even with other members of your household as much as possible, and don’t invite visitors into your home. This helps to stop other people from catching it.

You should stay in a well-ventilated room with a window that can be opened, and separate from other people in your home, if possible. Keep the door closed whenever you can.

Shared bathroom facilities should be regularly and thoroughly cleaned. If you have more than one bathroom in your home, keep one separate for your own use. Also do not share towels. Wherever possible, you should use the bathroom last for daily bathing, before thoroughly cleaning it.

This reduces the chance of spreading it. For regular use, clean any surface that you touch immediately afterwards. Always wash your hands for at least 20seconds.

Where possible avoid sharing spaces with the people you live with. For example, use the kitchen separately, and at meal times eat in another room. Clean any surfaces you touch immediately afterwards.

Use a dishwasher if you have one, otherwise hand wash dishes and cutlery separately, and also use separate tea towels.
