Hyndburn parkrun success

Hyndburn Council’s leader was put through his paces this weekend as he took part in the 66th Hyndburn parkrun, a free 5k event that takes place every Saturday morning at 9am at Wilson’s playing fields in Clayton-le-Moors.

Councillor Miles Parkinson has followed the fortunes of the event with interest since it began in October 2017, thanks to setup funding from the Council and the hard work of Event Director Liz Newton and her team of dedicated volunteers.  parkrun has become a major event around the world with nearly 2 million runners and walkers worldwide last weekend.

Cllr Miles Parkinson said; “Congratulations to all the dedicated volunteers who set up the Hyndburn parkrun and who have worked so hard to make it such a success.  It’s a great way of getting people up off their couches, giving them not only a chance to become more active and healthy, but also to meet people and socialise.  For myself I have to say it was a bit of a shock to the system, but great to be out and about in the warm spring sunshine.  To those who run or walk, week in, week out, in all weathers, come rain hail or shine, I salute you!

Event Director Liz said; “It was brilliant to welcome Miles to parkrun.  We assured him that it’s not about how fast you complete the 5k but he did say he’d be taking it slowly to give other Councillors the chance to beat his time!”

In its short history, Hyndburn parkrun has welcomed 2362 individual participants as well as 239 volunteers.  It’s free to register at www.parkrun.org.uk: just print your personal barcode and take it along on the day.
