Following over 30,000 votes cast online, the National Association of British Markets has recognised Accrington with a special commendation. The difficult judging of the 2022 NABMA Great British Market Awards led to a select few being singled out for recognition alongside the category winners.
Accrington Market was a recipient of one of the ‘highly commended’ certificates, which were explained by NAMBA chief executive David Preston, who said:
“These are presented to markets that play outstanding roles in their local communities and have demonstrated innovation, commitment and gone that extra mile to deliver a quality markets service.”
Hyndburn Borough Council leader, Miles Parkinson OBE, commented on the recognition, saying:
“This is wonderful news and comes after a challenging time for our Victorian Market Hall. The certificate will be proudly displayed, and we’ll continue to improve and celebrate everything our market has to offer.
“It’s important our community comes together to support the traders, new and old – and this commendation highlights just how much we do have available for people to enjoy.”
This was echoed by deputy leader Cllr. Paul Cox, who praised traders and staff, saying:
“This certificate is testament to the hard work from traders who always offer service with a smile, the market team who go above and beyond and the residents who choose to shop in our wonderful Market Hall.
“I’m pleased the efforts are being recognised nationally, well done to everyone involved.”
