During my year as Mayor, my Mayoress Joyce and I have felt so incredibly lucky to see just how many wonderful people we have here in Hyndburn who go that extra mile for others in their community, and never more so than now, during the Coronavirus pandemic. This is a time in our shared history which has highlighted the kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity of so many people in the Borough who have volunteered, or given generously, to help those in our community who are vulnerable and in need.
Last month I announced the launch of a Just Giving page in support of the Hyndburn Mayoral Charity Fund, which supports the various charities and voluntary groups who are working with, or under the umbrella of, the Hyndburn Hub. The Hub is part of a nationwide network of community hubs formed by Central Government in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Encompassing over 30 community groups the Hub has so far supported over 4,000 vulnerable people within the Borough, delivered over 6,000 meals and has over 160 registered volunteers who have given over 2,500 hours of their time offering support 7 days a week.
Maundy Relief, Hyndburn Leisure Trust, Ynot Aspire, Onward Homes Community Solutions, Homewise, Hyndburn Food Bank and Hyndburn Baby Bank are just some of the organisations and voluntary groups that have joined forces to be part of the Hub. As I write this the fund is over £1,800 and I’m pleased to announce that we’ll also be donating a further £1000 from the £16,000 raised for Mayoral Charities too.
The world has changed so much since last May when at my Mayor Making Ceremony I chose four fabulous local charities to support, Play4Uz2, Derian House Children’s Hospice, the North West Air Ambulance and the Hyndburn branch of Macmillan Cancer Support.
So I’m pleased that due to the hard work of my Charity committee, we can now honour that commitment to these wonderful local causes. We’re also able to make a donation to Clayton Amateur Boxing Club and small donations to Oswaldtwistle Scouts, Accrington Sea Cadets, the Accrington Rotary Club, Hyndburn Wheels Cycling Project, VICS Visually Impaired Children’s Support group and the Hyndburn Over 50s Club.
I must give a big shout out to my marvellous Mayoral Committee, a small group of volunteers who have worked their socks off throughout 2019 and up to the start of the pandemic, planning and organising lots of events to raise this staggering amount of money in just nine months.
A huge thank you also to everyone who has donated money over the year, to all the sponsors and all of you who have supported the various events and fundraisers and most recently the Hub via the Just Giving Page. The kindness and generosity of Hyndburn people is truly astonishing.
My thanks also goes to all those working and volunteering for the Hub, you are making such a huge difference to our community.
I also want to say a huge thanks to all our amazing NHS staff and all key workers in the Borough for carrying on delivering essential services during this crisis, we are all so grateful for all that you do.
I’m so proud to be Mayor of this Borough, where our community has united to meet the challenge of this crisis together. Sending best wishes to you and your families.
