As 2021 comes to a close, I’d like to start with a familiar message that we should never get tired of communicating.
Now, as it has been all year and throughout the pandemic, it’s important to recognise all of those working for the NHS in our borough.
Whether keeping existing services running under immense pressure, or staffing testing and vaccination facilities, their efforts are invaluable.
And with the pandemic throwing up new challenges, combined with the seasonal demands of flu season, the strain they’re operating under is significant.
Of course there are many who risk catching Covid-19 working in other areas of our society who largely go unnoticed.
They also deserve our gratitude and praise for their contribution to making life seem as normal as possible in very difficult circumstances.
I’m sure you’ll join me in reiterating a huge thank you to all workers for their efforts in keeping us safe and healthy – it’s hugely appreciated.
More Green Flag Award success
In a previous column I was delighted to congratulate our Council’s Parks Team and volunteers on achieving Green Flag status for nine of our public spaces.
Following on from that honour, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate Hyndburn’s nominees and winners in the Green Flag Awards.
The 25th edition of this annual national competition was held virtually and saw some of our Council staff and local volunteers recognised.
Grounds maintenance operative Gordon Mason received the prestigious ‘Employee of the Year’ award, well deserved after almost 50 years of service.
Ann Warrington, Chairperson of the ‘Friends of Rhyddings Park’ was named ‘Volunteer of the Year’ for her tireless work in Oswaldtwistle.
Also nominated for the volunteering prize was Cath Holmes, chair of the Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum.
The hard work of individuals like this, our Parks teams and wider communities are the reason our public green spaces are something to be proud of.
Stay safe this Christmas
So I hope you’ll have a happy and healthy festive season and maybe if the weather allows, meet in one of our award winning parks.
And remember, if you or someone you know needs any support, the Hyndburn Hub is available on 01254 388 111 or enquiries@hyndburnbc.gov.uk.
Merry Christmas!
