[Mayor of Hyndburn on Accrington Town Square]
On Saturday 21 May Councillor Abdul Khan was appointed as Mayor of Hyndburn for municipal year 2022/2023.
Serving the borough alongside his wife and Mayoress, Bushra Khan, The Mayor extended his gratitude to the local community for this great honour.
Cllr Khan, Mayor of Hyndburn said:
“It is Indeed a great honour and privilege to become only the third Kashmiri heritage mayor for Hyndburn. This is a very proud moment I believe this honour has come my way as reward for my commitment, hard work and honesty to my ward residents.
“This honour is not possible without the cross-party support of colleagues, and I thank fellow councillors for giving me full cross-party support to this great milestone. I can assure my colleagues, and the people of Hyndburn, that I will fulfil the duties as the Mayor of Hyndburn to the best of my ability.”

The annual mayor making ceremony was held at Accrington Town Hall in the Council Chambers, followed by a celebratory meal with family, friends and dignitaries in the Town Hall Ballroom.
The Mayor thanked and congratulated the retiring Mayor, Councillor Kath Pratt as part of the celebrations and reflected on his past journey as an arrival to Birmingham during the 1960s, where he took up as a bus conductor and then later moved to Accrington in 1973 where he became a local bus driver. He was joined by people from far and wide who travelled to witness and join him on this special day.
“I am proud to have so many people here with me to celebrate this memorable moment thank everyone who has supported me to reach this milestone. I acknowledge and appreciate my sister and brother-in-law who have travelled all the way from Mirpur to be here with me today.”
For his year in office Councillor Khan has chosen four charities to support: McMillans Cancer Research, Lancashire Air Ambulance, East Lancashire Hospice and Accrington & District Blind Society.
“It will be a great honour for me to work with and promote these charities throughout the next year. These charities are close to my heart for family reasons, and I hope together we can raise a huge amount of much-needed funds for them.”
Councillor Khan was elected as a councillor for central ward in 2012 and has served in this seat ever since.

“Adbul is well known and loved by all who seek his guidance and support in Hyndburn, he has served the community exceptionally and was also crucial to the pandemic response, supporting people not only in Central ward but beyond.
“This achievement and honour of becoming Mayor of Hyndburn shows others who may not have a politically inclined background or who were not born in the UK that opportunity is here – Abdul, you are an inspiration to so many and I am proud to be part of your journey, in-front of all your family and friends, and proud to be your colleague.
