You need warming up this winter – and Accrington market has the answer.
A mainstay of Accrington Market for 55 years, Smith’s Fruiterers draws in crowds of shoppers hungry to warm up with its famous broth mix as temperatures drop every year.
Now, more than ever, we’re all looking for affordable ways to nourish ourselves and our families.
So, it’s no wonder an incredible 400 bags of Smith’s handmade broth mix fly out of the stall every single day.
As the cost-of-living crisis hits households, Damien Smith, who has worked for his family business since starting as a 14-year-old 33 years ago, decided to keep the price of the broth mix the same as last year.
Damien shares the story behind this heartwarming favourite to help families enjoy a filling meal for less.
He said: “Everything in the broth comes from the Tarleton and Hesketh Bank area [west Lancashire]. It’s all local. That’s how we can keep the price low. I shred the mix myself, and it’s a favourite with customers when it’s cold.
“We start it in October, but we started a bit earlier this year and we’re selling a lot. Everyone has their own way of doing it – some make it the day before because they say it tastes better, others add cuts of meat, dumplings, lentils, or even soy sauce.”
And as for Damien’s secret ingredient?
“I put a bit of brown sauce in mine!”
With a team of eight keeping your broth mix fresh, affordable, and ready-to-cook, Smith’s serves thousands of Hyndburn homes and offers a delivery service to schools and care homes in the borough.
