Exciting Progress for Mercer Hall: £370,000 Secured for Next Phase of Development
The transformation of Great Harwood’s cherished Mercer Hall has reached an exciting new chapter, with £370,000 in funding now secured to drive the next stage of its redevelopment. This includes £250,000 from the Community Ownership Fund and £120,000 in capital investment from the Council.

This significant funding will support vital restoration efforts, including the installation of a brand-new dance floor which will provide a space that offers fresh opportunities and experiences for generations to come.
These plans celebrate the hall’s rich history and highlight its promising future as a vibrant centre for community engagement and creativity.
Portfolio Holder Councillor Noordad Aziz celebrated this vital milestone, saying:
“It’s wonderful to see plans for Mercer Hall progressing. This funding demonstrates how much the community values the building and what it represents. These improvements will ensure that Mercer Hall continues to inspire and serve future generations while remaining a space that feels welcoming and full of opportunity.”

The Mercer Hall Repurposing Group has been instrumental in shaping the hall’s future. With input from local residents and stakeholders, their ideas and visions reflect both the hall’s historical significance and the community’s evolving needs.
Ciaran Wells, Chair of the Hyndburn Leisure Board, shared his excitement about the progress:
“This funding brings us another step closer to the exciting future we’ve all envisioned, and I can’t wait to see these plans come to life.”
The Trust are also awaiting the outcome of a £30,000 bid to the Lancashire Environment Fund and a £250,000 bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. If successful, this funding will drive the next phase of Mercer Hall’s transformation, activating a two-year program of community-led activity.
Joyce Newton, who played a key role in securing the latest funding, said:
“The recent funding success highlights the incredible passion and commitment behind this project. I’m delighted to see things progressing and deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this journey. I’m eagerly looking forward to the outcome of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Lancashire Environment Fund bids.”
“The progress we’re seeing today is the result of tireless effort from everyone involved,” Councillor Noordad Aziz added. “It’s an exciting time for Great Harwood, and I can’t wait to see what we achieve together.”
