Council Opens King George V Playing Fields for Public Use This Summer

Hyndburn Borough Council has opened the gates to King George V Playing Fields for the summer months, giving residents access to the much-loved green space ahead of a major improvement project.

The site will undergo a £595,440 drainage and pavilion upgrade starting in September 2025, restoring the fields for grassroots sports by the 2026/27 season. While the pitches aren’t currently fit for formal play, local families can now enjoy the space for recreation and informal use.

Cllr Kimberley Whitehead, Deputy Leader, said:

“Rather than keeping the gates locked until work begins, I want people to enjoy this space over the summer. After years of delays caused by funding restrictions, the Council, under my direction has taken decisive action to get this project moving and return the fields to the community. I remain focused on delivering for our residents through actions, not words, and by listening to what matters most to them.”

The detailed design phase concludes in June, with tendering over the summer. Improvements will include new drainage, reseeding, and essential repairs to the pavilion’s heating and hot water systems.
