Council Secures Final Piece of the Puzzle for Accrington Town Square Transformation
Hyndburn Borough Council has officially acquired the final property within the historic Market Chambers, marking a major milestone in the transformation of Accrington town centre.
The acquisition, which completes a complex process involving over 30 property interests across Market Chambers, Burtons Chambers and the Market Hall, paves the way for the next phase of the Council’s ambitious town square regeneration project.
Councillor Clare Pritchard, Portfolio Holder for Transformation and Town Centres, was on hand to receive the keys to the final property. She said:
“This is an exciting moment for Accrington Town Square. Securing this final property means we can now move forward with real momentum. These buildings are part of our town’s heritage, and soon they’ll be part of its future – reimagined as DOME, a vibrant creativity hub for our community. I’m excited for what’s to come.”
With full ownership of Market Chambers now secured, the Council will begin detailed building surveys and finalise designs for a new glazed frontage. A tender process for façade cleaning/repairs, window and roof repairs and the new ground floor frontage is set to launch later this summer, with visible improvements expected by next year.
This project is part of a wider vision to revitalise Accrington’s town centre, creating a more welcoming, engaging and economically vibrant place for residents and visitors alike.
Councillor Pritchard added:
“Market Chambers is one of three iconic buildings on Accrington Town Square which is set to be restored. Work is well underway on the Market Hall and Burtons Chambers, with external facade and enabling works now complete. The tenders for the fit-out work on these buildings have now been returned and are being evaluated, with work expected to commence in the coming month to transform the internals of these fantastic structures.”
