Following a competitive procurement process, Rosslee Construction, an Accrington-based contractor, has been appointed to deliver the roofing works at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre. The programme will include a comprehensive roof refurbishment designed to protect and preserve this much-loved site.
In 2025, the Council committed £500,000 from its capital programme to support the restoration of the theatre. In addition, the venue was selected as one of ten recipients of funding through the Theatres Trust’s Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities programme. A grant of £10,000 was awarded to undertake an essential roof survey, identified as the first priority in securing the building’s long-term future.
Works are due to begin in April 2026 and are expected to last approximately five months.
Situated in the heart of Oswaldtwistle, the theatre has long been a cornerstone of local cultural life, hosting performances, community events and celebrations for generations. Its unexpected closure in 2023 was a significant loss to the community, and these repairs represent an important milestone in plans to restore the building.
Councillor Munsif Dad, Leader of Hyndburn Council, said:
“Following a thorough tender process, we are pleased to appoint Rosslee Construction to carry out the essential re-roofing works at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre. Protecting this valued community asset and ensuring it is structurally secure is a fundamental step towards reopening and long-term sustainability.
“It is particularly welcome that a respected local contractor has been successful. This investment not only safeguards the building but also supports local skills, employment and the wider Hyndburn economy.
“We are committed to working closely with Rosslee Construction to ensure the project is delivered efficiently and to a high standard, and we look forward to seeing works progress on site from April.”
Rosslee Construction will host monthly stakeholder meetings and provide monthly progress reports, alongside fortnightly updates throughout the duration of the project.
Councillor Kimberley Whitehead, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Arts, added:
“There is strong and passionate support across the community for the theatre. We share the ambition to see it once again thriving as a venue for arts, culture and community life. Appointing a local contractor to lead this next phase is a positive step, and we are eager to see work begin.”
The Council remains committed to keeping residents informed as the project progresses and welcomes continued community interest and support.
