COVID-19 Memorial Unveiled at Accrington Cemetery

A permanent memorial honouring those who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic has been installed at Accrington Cemetery, creating a dedicated space for reflection, remembrance and quiet contemplation for generations to come.

The memorial has been created in response to requests from local residents who wished to see a lasting tribute established within Hyndburn to remember family members, friends and neighbours whose lives were lost during the pandemic.

Situated within the peaceful surroundings of Accrington Cemetery, the memorial provides a place where people can pause, reflect on the impact of COVID-19, and remember loved ones who are no longer with us. It serves as a lasting reminder of one of the most challenging periods in modern history and recognises the profound loss experienced by families across the borough.

The project was inspired by local resident Peter Myerscough from Oswaldtwistle, who campaigned for a dedicated memorial space after visiting the National COVID Memorial Wall in London. Peter placed a heart on the wall in memory of his father, who sadly died from COVID-19, and subsequently worked with local councillors and the Council to help deliver a permanent place of remembrance in Hyndburn.

Cllr Stewart Eaves, Deputy Mayor of Hyndburn said:

“The COVID-19 pandemic touched every community across the country and left a lasting impact on countless families here in Hyndburn. This memorial provides a special place where people can come to remember those they lost, reflect on their memories, and pay their respects.”

“We are grateful to Peter Myerscough and all the residents who shared their experiences and supported the creation of this memorial. It stands as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives and ensures that their memory will continue to be honoured for many years to come.”

“This is a project I supported during my time as Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services including cemeteries, and I’m pleased to see this has now been completed.”

The Council would like to thank everyone who contributed their thoughts and support throughout the development of the memorial. It is hoped that the site will offer comfort to bereaved families and serve as a meaningful focal point for remembrance, reflection, and community solidarity.

As the nation continues to reflect on the legacy of the pandemic, the memorial stands as a permanent symbol of remembrance, resilience, and the enduring strength of the community.

Residents can find the new COVID-19 Memorial by the existing memorial wall in the Rose Garden of Accrington Cemetery.
