What is Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support?
Housing Benefit is a means tested support for people on benefit and/or a low income who are charged rent and Council Tax support is means tested support for people on benefit and/or a low income regarding the Council tax they are charged for the home that they live in.
Universal Credit has replaced Housing Benefit for most new working age claimants who wish to claim for help with their rent. You can only apply for Housing Benefit if one of the exceptions below applies.
- You and your partner are both state pension credit age. If you are not sure, you can check your state pension age online.
- You live in temporary or supported accommodation.
If you do not fall into one of the two categories detailed above, then you must apply for Universal Credit for help with your rent.
