11 parks in Hyndburn raise prestigious Green Flag Award after achieving international quality mark for parks and green spaces
Hyndburn Borough Council is celebrating today after retaining all 11 of its Green Flag awarded parks and green spaces for a further year. These parks, spread throughout the borough have proved once again to be public green spaces the residents of Hyndburn can be proud of.

Parks awarded the Green Flag for 2026/27 include Cutwood Park, Rishton; Gatty Park, Church; Lowerfold Park, Great Harwood; Memorial Park, Great Harwood; Milnshaw Park, Accrington; Oak Hill Park, Accrington, Peel Park and the Coppice, Accrington’ Rhyddings Park, Oswaldtwistle; Wilson Sports Village, Clayton-Le-Moors and Accrington Cemetery, Huncoat.
It comes as the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces celebrates its 30th year.
These parks and green spaces in Hyndburn are eleven of a record breaking 2,391 in the UK to achieve the award this year – a fantastic testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the Council’s Parks Team and the many volunteer and “Friends of” groups who help care for our green spaces, ensuring they are maintained to a high standard for visitors and residents to enjoy.
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.
“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.
“Hyndburn Borough Council has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.”

“Here at Wilson Sports Village today, home of the new Cath Thom Leisure Centre, it is clear why this, alongside ten other parks and green spaces, have been granted this prestigious award.”
“Next year, we’re aiming to go one better by adding a twelfth park, with plans underway for improvements to Bullough Park to enable it to achieve Green Flag status.”
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
