Great Harwood Welcomes New Pump Track at Central Car Park

Great Harwood’s town centre has been given a major boost this summer with the unveiling of an exciting new feature at the Central Car Park: a purpose-built pump track for young riders. The project is part of the wider regeneration efforts supported by the High Street Accelerator Programme and reflects the town’s commitment to creating a more welcoming, active, and creative environment for residents and visitors alike.

The new pump track, located on the site of the former skatepark, offers a safe and engaging space for children and young people to enjoy cycling and wheeled sports. Designed and built by Clark and Kent—the team behind the London 2012 Olympics BMX track, the facility is already proving popular with local families. The track was funded through a partnership between the Active Travel Lancashire project and the High Street Accelerator Programme, following strong community support for a new wheeled sports facility during public consultations.

Improvements have also been made to the car park itself, with over 20 new spaces created on a previously unusable section.

Councillor Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at Hyndburn Borough Council, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to deliver this fantastic new pump track for the families of Great Harwood. It provides a safe, purpose-built space for our younger residents to get active, have fun, and enjoy the outdoors. Seeing children already out there with their bikes and scooters, building skills and making friends, is exactly what we hoped for.”

Later this summer, just a few steps away, a bold new mural which will stretch along the 75-metre wall of the car park, celebrating the town’s past, present, and future will be created by local artist Amy Callaghan in collaboration with schoolchildren and community members. The artwork will draw on local history, nature and imaginative visions of the future.

The artwork will be unveiled by Amy from Pigs in Mud Art Studios later this year.

To finalise the project, additional landscaping works and planting will be carried out around the pump track later this year.

The Great Harwood High Street Accelerator Plan is funded by the UK Government via the High Street Accelerators Pilot Programme.
