Hyndburn Borough Council Begins Delivery of Food Waste Caddies Ahead of April Food Waste Recycling Launch
Hyndburn Borough Council is preparing for the introduction of weekly food waste collections, which will begin on 1 April 2026 as part of the Government’s new Simpler Recycling legislation. This national initiative aims to make recycling easier for residents, improve recycling rates and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This week, the Council took delivery of thousands of food waste caddies which will be distributed to households across Hyndburn starting Monday 12 January, weather permitting. Deliveries will begin in Rishton (Monday North) and Oswaldtwistle (Monday South) and continue over the next four to five weeks until all households have received their caddies.

Each household will receive:
- A 23-litre silver outdoor food waste caddy
- A 7-litre kitchen caddy
- A roll of caddy liners
- A bin collection calendar
- An information leaflet explaining how to recycle food waste
Residents are advised not to put food waste out before 1 April, as collections will not start until then. Those living in flats, sheltered accommodation, or properties with communal bins will typically receive the smaller kitchen caddy, liners, and calendar only.
Food waste currently makes up around 33% of household residual waste and is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Weekly collections will allow food waste to be processed through anaerobic digestion, creating renewable energy and nutrient-rich biofertiliser, while reducing carbon emissions and disposal costs.
Councillor Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said:
“Weekly food waste collections are being rolled out across the country, and Hyndburn is required to follow suit. This change is a legal requirement and will mean a big shift in how we recycle locally, and our team will work to make sure this change runs smoothly. Recycling food waste is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can make a real difference, turning waste into clean energy and helping us build a greener borough. I want to remind residents not to place their food waste caddies out for collection before 1 April 2026, as they will not be collected prior to that date.”
