Hyndburn currently boasts a record breaking 11 green flag awarded parks and is submitting a bid to hopefully make that an even dozen with the addition of Bullough Park.

Munsif Dad, Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, said:

“This council has always taken great pride in our parks, believing that everyone deserves to have access to green spaces to escape the stress of day-to-day life.

Last year, we celebrated retaining all 11 of our Green Flag awards – the most of any borough in Lancashire. This year, we want to go even further by adding Bullough Park to this already impressive lineup.

That is why we have committed £50,000 in our budget for the necessary renovations to ensure that Bullough Park reaches green flag award standard, providing our residents with another world class green space that can be enjoyed by all.

I have no doubt that our hardworking Parks team are up to the challenge of beating their own record and providing ever-improving green spaces for the people of Hyndburn.”

This builds on recent work carried out in partnership with the Prospects Foundation and the Forestry Commission to create ‘Bullough Community Woodland’ on the higher plateau of the park. The scheme has seen over £200,000 invested and in just 7 days in December 2025, 3600 trees were planted. A large new wildlife pond and small wetland areas have also been created, along with a wildflower ‘mini-meadow’, adding interest for visitors and enhancing biodiversity. Work has also included boundary and entrance improvements, new paths and steps and will shortly be followed by a third phase of work with extra footpath links, new benches, information panels and maps, ensuring it can be enjoyed by everyone.

These wonderful additions to the park wouldn’t have been possible without funding from Hyndburn Borough Council, the Forestry Commission, Lancashire Environment Fund, Lancashire Partnership Against Crime, the Government’s Pride in Place grant and the hard work of the Prospects Foundation.

If successful, Bullough Park would join the 11 current award-winning parks and green spaces in Hyndburn: Milnshaw Park, Oak Hill Park, Peel Park, Gatty Park, Cutwood Park, Lowerfold Park, Mercer Park, Wilsons and Woodlands, Accrington Cemetery and Crematorium, Memorial Park and Rhyddings Park.

Applications for the Green Flag awards will be submitted in January 2027 with a view to being judged in April 2027 at the earliest.
