Leader’s Viewpoint: Cllr Munsif Dad August 2025

As we move through August and enjoy the last of the summer, I am pleased to share an update on some of the important developments taking place across Hyndburn.

This week, we will be taking time to reflect and remember those who served during the Second World War as we mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. On Friday 15th August, the Town Crier Rawden Kerr will enunciate a VJ Day Proclamation before observing the national 2 minute silence at 12pm on Broadway, Accrington. This will be followed on Saturday 16th August by the Royal British Legion leading a commemorative service at 11am at Accrington Pals Memorial Gardens.  I hope many residents will be able to join us in paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served in the Far East and Pacific.

Accrington’s Neighbourhoods Board, which oversees a £20 million regeneration programme, is seeking a new Chair following the resignation of Andy Tatchell due to personal health reasons. Andy played a vital role in the Board’s early development, and we thank him sincerely for his dedication.

The Board brings together councillors, MPs, community leaders, and others to shape a 10-year plan, focused on strengthening communities and social infrastructure. Hyndburn Borough Council is the accountable body.

We’re now inviting expressions of interest from individuals with the skills, experience and passion to lead the Board through its next phase, including the development of a four-year Regeneration Plan starting April 2026. This voluntary role requires a commitment of at least four years.  To apply, please send a short personal statement by Friday 22 August to becky.moon@hyndburnbc.gov.uk. More details are available at: www.accringtontownsquare.com/plan-for-neighbourhoods.

Work is progressing behind the scenes on the redevelopment of Accrington Town Square. Last month, the phase one contract for the strip-out and external renovations of the Market Hall and Burtons Chambers was completed. Tenders for the phase 2 fit-out of the buildings have been returned and are currently being evaluated, with work on site scheduled to commence in the coming month. Work will mostly be taking place inside these iconic buildings so will be less visible from the street view. We will keep you informed on progress and an anticipated completion date at www.accringtontownsquare.com

I am delighted to highlight the Culture and Heritage Grants Scheme, which aims to support local organisations and groups who are preserving and celebrating Hyndburn’s unique local identity. If you have a project or initiative that strives to build pride in place and bring people together through culture, I strongly encourage you to apply. This is a great opportunity to bring your ideas to life and contribute to the borough’s cultural legacy. Full details are available on our website at: https://www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk/news/new-funding-to-celebrate-culture-and-heritage-in-hyndburn/.

I would like to take a moment to reflect on the importance of communication. We understand that whilst conversations online can be helpful and important for community bonds, sometimes they can unfortunately lead to confusion or mixed messages about local issues. That’s why we encourage residents to check official Council sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information. We are committed to keeping the public informed and welcome any questions or feedback via our usual channels, including the Hyndburn Borough Council social media pages, website, and newsletter. By working together in this way, we can ensure everyone has a clear understanding of the decisions and developments that affect our communities. You can subscribe to our monthly newsletter at www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk

Finally, I am very much looking forward to one of the borough’s most popular annual events returning this August bank holiday weekend (Saturday 23rd August) with Amazing Accrington’s Soapbox Challenge. This fantastic day always brings colour, excitement and community spirit to Accrington town centre, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. I hope to see many of you there enjoying the festivities and cheering on our local racers. Hyndburn Borough Council proudly sponsors this fantastic event.
