Leader’s Viewpoint: Councillor Munsif Dad
I would like to start this week’s viewpoint by reflecting on this summer’s fantastic programme of community events, that I am sure many will agree are one of the highlights of our borough. Events are so important for community spirit and uniting the borough so I would like to extend a warm thanks to all those who dedicate their time and effort to making Hyndburn a place for all to enjoy.
One of the standout events was, of course the Soapbox Challenge that so many look forward to throughout the year. This jam-packed day with live demonstrations, stalls, entertainment, and more, once again pulled in huge crowds at the end of August. It was wonderful to see such a huge turnout on the day and everyone who took part in the race this year should be very proud of themselves.
I am especially pleased to announce that at the end of October, a brand-new event called ‘Enlighten’ will be taking over Accrington Town Centre. Look out for more information on this in the coming weeks.
The Council were pleased this month to invite applications to organise three new events in Great Harwood. We’re investing £70,000 via the Highstreet Accelerator Fund and we’ve received some fantastic applications from organisers which are currently being reviewed.
On Sunday 15th September, Haworth Art Gallery will be opening their doors once again for their annual free family-friendly Heritage Open day, organised and produced in conjunction with the Friends of Haworth Art Gallery. Everyone is invited to visit the Gallery from 12pm to 4pm for a day dedicated to immersing the public in the history of the Gallery, and Hyndburn more broadly, with a wide range of free activities, games and performances throughout the day.
It is estimated nationally that up to 880,000 low-income households are missing out on Pension Credit, and this can be a gateway to other financial support like the winter fuel payments, reductions in electricity bills, a free TV license for those over 75, and more. I encourage residents to check their eligibility here https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility
The Household Support Fund is now open and accepting applications. This fund has proven time and time again to be vital to many residents. Help is available if you’re struggling to afford essentials like energy and water bills or food, regardless of whether you are in receipt of benefits. This is a vital fund used by many of the most vulnerable and we are delighted that the government has announced an extension for a further 6 months.
Residents can apply online at https://www.hyndburnleisure.co.uk/community/household-support-fund/
I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be taking a report to Cabinet next week to formally approve the Cabinet Action Fund. A fund of £20,000 will be created to provide vital support to residents and address various needs within the community. Charities and community groups across all wards will be invited to request grant funding from the Cabinet Action Fund through their ward Councillors. The report will also establish a Cabinet Working Group to assess any bids received. I look forward to distributing this funding to worthy organisations across Hyndburn.
Finally, many residents will have noticed the improvements made at Accrington Pals Memorial Garden on Church Street. On 21st September, we’ll be unveiling a very special sculpture which will complete this project. A service will take place at 10.30am and all are welcome to attend.
