Leaders’s Viewpoint: Councillor Munsif Dad
As we approach the end of the year, it is a wonderful time to reflect on the achievements and events that have shaped our community over the past month. I am delighted to share some of the highlights and upcoming initiatives that will continue to enhance our borough.
Firstly, I am pleased to announce the awarding of grants to five local organisations through the Cabinet Action Fund. This initiative, introduced earlier this year, aims to support community projects that make a difference to our residents’ lives. The grants awarded include £500 for Oswaldtwistle District Women’s Institute to help with room hire for a craft club, £500 for Fairfield Boxing Club to provide free sessions aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour, £1,500 for St Andrews Primary School to cover transport costs for their Christmas play, £250 for Masjid and Madrassa Islamia to support community activities, and £500 for Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust. These grants will enable these organisations to continue their valuable work and contribute to the services they provide to our community.
In other news, this week I announced at Cabinet that we are exploring the feasibility of opening an independent MOT station to support our local taxi trade. This initiative aims to provide a dedicated facility for taxi operators, ensuring they have access to reliable and efficient vehicle testing services. We recognise the importance of the taxi trade to our local economy and are committed to supporting it in any way we can.
We were thrilled to announce our partnership as the shirt sleeve sponsor for Accrington Stanley Women’s Football Club. This collaboration allows helps the club to provide shirts to over 260 dedicated players, showcasing our commitment to supporting women’s sports. Together, we are championing a future where women’s sports continue to thrive and inspire.
On a festive note, I had the honour of attending the annual blessing of the crib on behalf of the Mayor last week. This cherished tradition brings our community together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas and reflect on the values of hope, joy, and togetherness. It was heartening to see residents and pupils from St Mary Magdalen’s come together for this special event.
The Christmas lights switch-on events have been a fantastic success so far. The highlight was undoubtedly the switch-on in Accrington, where the huge crowds were entertained by Martin Kemp and a host of other fantastic acts. It was a joy to see the town centre illuminated with beautiful lights and filled with festive cheer. A special mention must also go to the primary school children from across the borough who opened the event with some festive carols. Thanks to Amazing Accrington for organising such a great event.
Looking ahead, I am excited about a new addition to our switch-on programme this year in Fern Gore. This event promises to bring even more festive spirit to our community, and I encourage everyone to join in the celebrations at 6pm on 9th December, at the junction of Rimington Avenue and Fern Gore Avenue.
Finally, I would like to address reports of proposed local government reorganisation. We are currently awaiting the publication of the Government white paper, which will provide further details on the proposals. Rest assured, we are closely monitoring the situation and will keep our staff and residents informed as more information becomes available.
As we move into the festive season, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all our residents. May this time be filled with joy, peace, and togetherness. Thank you for your continued support and for being part of our community.
