Mayor urges residents to stay safe around water this Drowning Prevention Week
The Mayor of Hyndburn is calling on residents to learn a few simple water safety tips as part of Drowning Prevention Week (13–20 June).
This call encourages residents to take extra care around open water this summer following a series of tragic incidents across the United Kingdom that have claimed the lives of multiple people during the recent heatwave, many of them children and teenagers.
Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Noordad Aziz, said:
“My heart goes out to the families, friends and communities who are grieving following these heartbreaking tragedies. The loss of any young life is devastating, and as we remember the young people who have tragically lost their lives, we must also recognise the important lessons these incidents teach us.”
The national Drowning Prevention campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks around water and help prevent accidental drownings, particularly as families and young people spend more time outdoors during the summer months.
Cllr Noordad Aziz continued:
“As the weather gets warmer, it’s natural that people are drawn to rivers, canals, lakes and other open water. What we must remember is that even on a hot day, the water can be dangerously cold and conditions can change quickly.”
“Drowning can happen in seconds and often without warning. That’s why I would encourage everyone to remember four simple water safety steps: Stop and Think, Stay Together, Call 999 in an emergency, and Float if you get into difficulty in the water. These simple actions could save a life.”
The Mayor also reminded parents and carers that water safety starts at home.
Cllr Noorded Aziz added:
“Children can drown in very small amounts of water, which is why constant supervision is so important. Whether you’re at home, in the garden, on holiday or enjoying a day out, never leave children unattended near water.”
“The greatest tribute we can pay to those who have lost their lives in the recent heatwave is to ensure others remain safe. I encourage everyone to share these messages with family and friends and help protect our communities this summer.”
