Weekly Food Waste Recycling Service Coming to Hyndburn in April 2026
Hyndburn Borough Council is rolling out a weekly food waste recycling collection from 1 April 2026, in line with the Government’s Simpler Recycling initiative. Residents will receive kitchen and kerbside caddies with free liners during January and February 2026, giving everyone time to prepare. The kitchen caddy is a small 7 litre container designed to sit on a kitchen worktop or in a cupboard. The larger 23 litre outdoor caddy, although much smaller than the other outdoor bins, is designed to be stored outside.

Why Food Waste Recycling Matters
In the UK, food waste is currently the largest single material found in residual waste bins, making up approximately 33% of all waste collected from a household’s general waste, a substantial part of domestic rubbish that often ends up in landfill. Recycling food waste helps us:
- Generate renewable energy through anaerobic digestion
- Cut carbon emissions and address climate change
- Reduce disposal costs for our local services
- Produce nutrient-rich biofertiliser for nearby farms
Important Information for Residents
- Caddies and liners arrive January – February 2026
- Do not put out your food waste caddy before 1 April 2026 – collections start on that date
- Weekly collections begin 1 April 2026 – check your recycling calendar for your collection day

Councillor Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services said:
“Weekly food waste collections are being rolled out across the country, and Hyndburn is required to follow suit. This change is a legal requirement and will mean a big shift in how we recycle locally, and our team will work to make sure this change runs smoothly.
Recycling food waste is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can make a real difference, turning waste into clean energy and helping us build a greener borough.
I’ve asked all councillors to take part in a mini pilot of the scheme so they can answer questions and provide advice to anyone who might have concerns. We know this is a big change, and we’re supporting residents every step of the way. Every home in Hyndburn will receive an information leaflet through their door before Christmas, further guidance will be included with your caddy when it arrives and full details are available on the Council website at www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk/food-waste
The Council will begin delivering the new food caddies to all homes across Hyndburn from the middle of January. That’s 39,000 homes receiving 2 new food caddies. We expect to have delivered all caddies by the end of February. We will start collecting food waste on your usual collection date from 1st April 2026, so please do not start using the food waste caddies until then, as they will not be collected prior to this date.”
