Work begins in Knuzden as Hyndburn Council confirms further investment in play areas for 2026/27

Work has now begun on improvements to Knuzden Play Area, with a £29,100 upgrade underway to enhance facilities for local children and families.

The project, which started on 9 March, will see two new pieces of play equipment installed alongside a series of smaller improvements. These include a new bench, refreshed floor markings and new play panels designed to support imaginative, inclusive and educational play.

Cllr Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said:

“It is fantastic to see funding supporting more play area improvements across the borough. The Knuzden site is well used and valued, but we know there is room for enhancement. These upgrades will help ensure the play area remains engaging and accessible for children of all ages and abilities.”

The new play panels have been selected with inclusivity and community interaction in mind, offering features that encourage creativity and social play. Additional seating and refreshed markings will further improve the site’s usability and appearance.

The Knuzden improvements come shortly after Hyndburn Borough Council agreed its 2026/27 budget, which includes a further £250,000 allocated for play area upgrades across the borough. Parks in Rishton and Accrington have already been earmarked for improvement as part of this new investment.

Cllr Eaves added:

“Our parks and green spaces are among Hyndburn’s most valued assets, and the Council remains committed to ongoing investment in facilities that support residents’ wellbeing. I’m delighted that an additional £250,000 has been secured for play area improvements in the year ahead.”

The Knuzden play area will remain closed during the three‑week construction period. It is expected to reopen in time for the Easter holidays.
