Hyndburn Borough Council Announces Three New Community Skip Days
Hyndburn Borough Council Announces Three New Community Skip Days
Last month, Hyndburn Council proudly launched a new initiative called “Skip Days,” aimed at providing residents with a convenient way to dispose of their waste. The first Skip Day took place in December on Avenue Parade, Accrington, and was met with great success as many residents took advantage of the opportunity to dispose of their waste responsibly.
The Council’s Cabinet committed to introducing this scheme many months ago, and thanks to a partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK to provide the skips, have now been able to confirm three new community skip days.

The next skip day will take place on Saturday 1st February between 8:30am and 11:00am between South Street and Clement Street in Barnfield Ward.
Skip Days are part of the Council’s aim to help improve the environment for residents making it a better place to live, work and play
Councillor Clare McKenna, Barnfield Ward Councillor said:
“I am delighted to host the Council’s next community skip day in Barnfield Ward. The skip will be available for residents to use to dispose of any additional general waste they may have and is an important resource for those unable to get to the waste and recycling centre at Whinney Hill.”
After the 1st February, the next skip days will take place in Great Harwood. On Saturday 8th February, 8:30 – 11:00am the community skip will be located on the junction of Lomax Street and St Hubert’s Road, and on the 15th February it will be on the junction of Masefield Close and Wordsworth Drive.
Councillor Jodi Clements, Netherton Ward Councillor said:
“We are glad to be available to provide two community skip days in Great Harwood in February, and we hope that residents will make use of them. Councillors will be there on the day helping out and we encourage residents to get involved. There are many community and resident led litter picking groups across the borough and their contribution makes a real difference to the cleanliness of our towns. We are very grateful to all those who take part in these and we encourage any litter picking groups to make use of the these skips on these dates.”
The skip days initiative is part of the Council’s broader effort to keep our streets clean and reduce fly-tipping. SUEZ recycling and recovery UK are providing the skips for community use.
Richard Phillips, Landfill Operations Manager at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said:
“As the operator of an essential service for the residents of Lancashire, we see ourselves very much as part of the local community and strive to be a good neighbour. We are therefore proud to support efforts which aim to improve the environment for residents, making Hyndburn a better place to live, work and play.”
In addition to Skip Days, the Council offers a free bulky waste collection service, allowing residents to have up to six items of bulky waste collected for free each month. This service can be easily arranged through the Council’s website.
Fly-tipping remains a visible issue in many areas across Hyndburn causing environmental damage and posing health risks. It is not only unsightly but also costly to clean up, diverting valuable resources away from other essential services.
The Council is committed to tackling this problem and urges residents to dispose of their waste responsibly. Residents must ensure that any waste disposal companies they use are licensed. Unlicensed firms offering cheap skips and backyard clearances often resort to illegal dumping or burning of waste, which can result in fines for the residents involved. Before asking any individual or business to dispose of waste on your behalf, always check that they are registered and licensed to do so.
Failure to use a licensed operator can lead to a fine, people are responsible for ensuring their waste is disposed of legally.
Councillor Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, commented on the initiative:
“We were thrilled with the positive response to our first Skip Day and are excited to continue this initiative with three more confirmed dates. Providing residents with accessible waste disposal options helps in our fight against fly-tipping and maintaining the cleanliness of our streets. Our free bulky waste collection service is second to none. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these services.”
