Nature and Habitats
Brookside is a wonderful mosaic of woodland, grasslands, wetlands, lodges and brook. Our habitat surveys have found 100’s of species on site, including some of national significance! Protecting and improving habitats for wildlife is very important to local people and will be a focus for how the site is managed in the future.
Here are a few of the things that have been happening:
- undertaking habitat surveys
- writing a habitat management plan
- selected grassland areas have been cut and planted with wildflower seeds with help from volunteers
- producing a woodland management plan

Ringlet butterfly.
So what comes next for nature at Brookside?
- grassland, hedgerow, woodland and wetland enhancements which will help these habitats to thrive
- working towards Local Nature Reserve status
- adopting measures set out in the Lancashire Nature Recovery strategy to manage pests, diseases and harmful non-native species
- more community events to inspire and educate, bringing people closer to nature on their doorstep
